The North Face returns with another collaboration with UNDERCOVER designer Jun Takahashi. Continuing the SOUKUU line, which specifically focuses on the technical performance of outdoor-oriented products, key TNF pieces are reimagined through the UNDERCOVER perspective.
For “SOUKUU Season 2,” the collection embodies exploration, driven by sophisticated and performance-oriented technology for outdoor activities like hiking, trail running, and more. The collaboration redefines conventional adventure apparel with a holistic approach, striking a stronger balance between durable performance fabrics and effortless forms. Lightweight materials take center stage in the clothing line, ensuring ease of wear and adaptability to various weather conditions.
The collection showcases the notable packable fishtail shell parka, featuring enhanced ventilation zippers for all-day comfort during exploration. The bag can be stowed away or converted into a crossbody bag in seconds, facilitating easy carrying. Additionally, the packable mountain light shell jacket boasts multiple pockets for storing essentials during hikes, similar to the trail run packable wind jacket. Utility shorts, t-shirts, and an adjustable trail run cap round out the collection, offering lightweight and waterproof options suitable for vigorous outdoor hikes or runs.
Prior to the collaboration release, Hypebeast interviewed Jun Takahashi about the second drop.
Hypebeast: How have you collaborated with The North Face since the beginning of your partnership?
Jun Takahashi: We discuss the basic concept, and I create design sketches based on it. Then, The North Face adds functionality to finalize the design.
What does the SOUKUU line represent to you, and how are you redesigning it to align with the UNDERCOVER aesthetic?
SOUKUU is outdoor wear that seamlessly integrates with both natural and urban environments, aiming to bring wearers closer to a meditative state of mind. We are reinterpreting The North Face’s historical designs and infusing them with UNDERCOVER’s aesthetic to modernize them.
Could you walk us through the design process behind the new collection?
Based on The North Face’s plan, we updated its historical designs. This season, we added trail running gear. I sketched out design drawings based on the concept. Through collaboration with The North Face on functional aspects, we finalized the materials and color schemes.
How have you challenged the concept of trail and hiking across the collection?
I’ve designed it with hydration functionality in mind, unlike regular (city) running wear. The fit of the tops is relaxed to accommodate hot weather conditions.
How do the garments embrace new forms of functionality?
Instead of constantly pursuing novelty, I focus on incorporating minimal functionality and design.
The North Face x UNDERCOVER “SOUKUU Season 2” collaboration will be available worldwide at select retailers and online starting March 28 and in Japan on April 5.
